Northland alert: NMTC starts 30 April!

Kris from Northland Runner emailed me (I'd been impatient previously) to note that the spring and fall NMTC races were now up on the schedule. [And now I'm more worried about the month I've got to get in shape for the Bull Run than the more distant threat posed by the Bjorklund.]

Half Marathons in June

Has anyone ever run the Heart of the City half marathon in Burnsville, the Sour Grapes half in Brainerd or the Grandpa Stays Home half in Shoreview? I'd like to do a half in between my Green Bay Marathon in mid May and my Ragnar Ultra Relay in late July and I'm not so sure I want to do Grandma's.

I am going to register for the 5k at Minnehaha on April 26th. Has anyone participated in this one before? I haven't, and I'm curious about it. Are there a lot of hills, or is it a fairly easy run?

New running experience

I'm doing THIS race tomorrow morning. All of the events take place on the frozen lake. There is little if any snow on the lake right now, according to the race director, and since I've never run on ice or in spikes before, I decided to do a trial run this afternoon at a lake closer to my house. It was so much fun! I thought I'd be way slower than usual, but I found that it was easy to run fast. The spikes provide so much security that you can really open it up, and of course you're running on a completely flat surface. I can't describe how fun it was. I am hooked! I've just been hating my runs and all of my workouts for the whole month of January, so it felt great to enjoy myself out there. Maybe I just needed to try something new.

Grandma's, anyone?

Are any of you planning to run Grandma's this year? I've run Twin Cities the last 2 years, and I was half-thinking that I wouldn't even do a marathon this year and focus on other fitness-related things. Now a friend of mine is begging me to do Grandma's. I was not at all mentally prepared to start marathon training again so soon, but maybe training in the cooler months wouldn't be so bad. I recall that the weather has been pretty hot/humid the last couple of years for Grandma's, so maybe we're due for an ideal weather day this year. Registration is coming up fast. Grandma's veterans, sell me on this! :)

Does anyone know what happened to the runners lj community? It seems to have been deleted.

Edit: Okay! I sent the mod a message so hopefully he'll let me know what's going on. I'll let everyone know when I do.

Hi all,

First off, I'm not technically a Minnesotian any more, I live in Seattle but was born and raised in St. Cloud, MN and still have plenty of friends and family there & through out greater MN.

This got forwarded on to me from one of those said friends (click the logo for link)...

Wish I could make it but sadly I've already got plans to head back in June for Grandma's...

...oh yeah... GO WILD!!!

Sadly, I can't do it--nor can I make any of the Wednesday night races this fall. Stupid work. I'll be waiting anxiously for the switchover to Sundays, sigh.

So, how'd everyone do at Grandma's?! My plan is to post about my race later today.

Also - has anyone ever done the WhistleStop marathon in Wisconsin? I'm thinking about it but I've heard the course (it's an old railroad grade that's been made into a trail) is super soft and tough to run that far on.

Twin Cities Running Groups

I am looking for some running groups in the Twin Cities (St. Paul or Minneapolis would be best).  I did my first triathlon a few weeks ago and am in training for a longer one in August and it seems that I am battling what I struggled with the most when I ran back in high school, the mental monster.  I think if I could run regularly with other people of a similar ability I would have a much easier time - particularly when it comes to pushing myself.

If it makes any difference, my race had a 5k run, and my August tri has a 10k run (which I would like to be able to run in around 40 minutes).  I am also considering running a few other 5/10k and or 10-mile running races.

Thanks.

Summer

In an effort to stave off my negativity as summer approaches, I decided to try and make a list of the good things of summer running.

- Not needing to get a mile into a run before feeling comfortable/not freezing
- Running in a sport bra!
- Stretching outside
- Jumping in a lake after or in the middle of a run
- Trail running is possible again
- The roads won't be covered in slush/loose snow/ice
- Cold showers

Anyone have anything to add?

summer races

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy this beautiful spring weather we’ve been having.  I know I am!

Yesterday I registered for my first two races this summer.  I will be doing the Uff Da 5 K on May 19 and the Gopher to Badger half marathon on August 11.  I plan to add a couple of 10 K races to my schedule as part of my half marathon training but I haven’t decided which ones yet.  It feels really good to finally commit to a couple of races and have some goals to work for now.

So what races are the rest of you doing?  What are your training goals for the summer?

Grandma's accommodations

Apr. 11th, 2007 | 02:24 pm
posted by: osani in mn_runners

Does anyone have any advice on finding a place to stay in Duluth for Grandma's Marathon?

The places seem like such a rip-off, like just because there are few accommodations to choose from, they feel they have the right to charge ridiculous amounts with a 2-3 day minimum. It makes me want to sleep in my car. I bet they get so much business from the event. Why do they feel the need to rip people off?

Thanks!

Team in Training

I am doing the Nike Women's Marathon with Team in Training in October.  I know, it's more than six months away and I probably shouldn't worry about it yet.  I am jazzed about the running part, but scared sh!tless about the fundraising.  It's a lot of money.

So I thought I would take a chance and see if anyone else here in Minnesota is doing a TNT event or considering one and might be interested in teaming up to do some fundraising.  Maybe pool some ideas together or throw an event?  Or if you've done it in the past, if you have any creative event ideas because I am too overwhelmed by my fundraising goal to plan anything.

As the snow melts . . .

Remember to share the paths!

Last night in the Twin Cities, the temp was 80 degrees, and EVERYONE was out running by the lakes. With the running paths still wet or muddy, many people were on the bike paths. As I learned, this is workable ONLY if people make a concentrated effort to move to one side when people are approaching.

I'm very guilty of this myself--I tend to play chicken with approaching runners and be a total path hog. If you're running in a group, remember to shout out "Bike!" or "Runner!" or "large german shepard!"

In other news, how is Grandma's training going for those who are running it this year?
